Self-care and Well-being

I’m going to write a serious of posts about self-care because I believe it’s a very important part of one’s overall well-being.

Self-care and Well-beingEspecially, in this fast-paced lifestyle, where we’re so busy focusing on our day to day responsibilities and taking care of others’ needs, such as family, we don’t pay attention to our needs such as self-care. Years and years ago, when I was single, I worked 6-7 days a week. Having 2-3 jobs and going to college was really testing my mental, emotional and physical abilities.

Well, at that time I was in my late 20s, and could handle it better. On the other hand, I had neglected myself. I know now that just because I was young, I should not have skipped my self-care, because it could bite me in the “you know what”. After some health issues, I learned to put myself in in front of others. I thought It sounded selfish, but when I was taking a flight, I learned better. Before departure, the flight attendant was giving the usual presentation about the safety rules and that was when I had my “aha” moment. She said in an emergency when the oxygen masks get released, put the mask on myself first and then I should help others. I thought that made sense. If I help others first, it’s more likely that I won’t be able to help anyone else before I pass out without oxygen. If I help myself first, I’m sure I have a better chance to help others, too. What do you think about that? There’re many of you who are still having a hard time practicing this. I’m not saying that I’m perfect. I still have to be very conscious about it and tell myself that it’s OK to put myself first or gift myself with some “me time”. People who love helping others have a natural response of putting them first. I’m one of those individuals. So you may ask – how can you change YOUR behavior?
I have learned the hard way, so my goal is to spread the word, give you some useful information that you may implement in your everyday life and see if it works for you. Especially, I’d like to prevent your overall health to be affected negatively if you have not mastered self-care yet. So I can give you some suggestions that work for me and have some simple steps that I have been using to reduce my guilt of not putting others first.
Last week, I scheduled an interview with Ralph A. Gonzalez, a NYC hypnotherapist, to shoot a couple of videos for my YouTube channel. He was very kind to invite me to his place in New York. We had so much fun, but we got tired after recording 4 videos. Suddenly ideas weren’t coming that easily, and we knew we needed a break. The old me would have pushed through and worked harder to make it happen but the new me acted differently. I was able to let it go and realize that we don’t have to work that hard. This is time for “me time”, not for work. So we took a lunch break, had a nice conversation and relaxed our minds. Later, we went outside for a walk and stopped by the Hudson River. It was very refreshing. Being near the water felt relaxing and mesmerizing at the same time. Ralph took a couple of pictures that I’m going to share with you.

After my “me time”, creative juices were flowing, and we were able to do 2 more videos with no effort, just natural flow. Think about it. Why would you go against the current when you can swim with it?! Self-care also taught me to work smart, not hard.
